Now why in the world would I admit to not being the best mommy on the planet? Well, I'll tell you . . . A couple of years ago my then-5-year-old (Thing 2) gave me the NTBMOTP moniker one night as I was serving up dinner. I don't remember what we were talking about (probably something that the Things wanted to do that I had shot down--not entirely unusual), but whatever it was, Thing 2's response was, "Well you know, you're not the best mommy on the planet." I about died laughing (and I'm sure DH spewed tea out of his nose). She was so small, and yet so matter-of-fact, it was hysterical. Now anytime DH or I make a questionable parenting decision, all the other has to say is, "Well, you know . . . " and we both crack up. Out of the mouths of babes . . . And you know what? I rather enjoy not being the best mommy on the planet. It sure takes the pressure off!
I'm the in-the-trenches homeschooling mom of Thing 1, Thing 2 and Thing 3, who is trying to produce well-educated children without inflicting any permanant damage :-)
On the Nightstand--the lighter side (DH reads the heavy stuff)
The Well-Trained Mind by Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer--that darn book that messes up your whole plan to scrapbook for hours on end while the kids are in school.
The Educated Child by William J. Bennett--a 1/2 Price Books find. A good read.
Jane Austen (so far I've made it through P&P and S&S. Still working on Emma.)
A rotating assortment of Tracy Chevalier (Girl With a Pearl Earring) novels. I've read them all, I believe, except for her latest, Burning Bright, which I can't seem to get into. And now I remember it's also overdue. Phooey.
Cookie magazine--not crazy about this one. Perhaps it's the complete irrelevance to my life. . .

#9. Need to think about this one.
#8. Also need to think about.
#7. Maybe this list is too long.
#6. I should probably feel guiltier than this.
#5. Ok, I feel guilty for not feeling guiltier.
#4. My house should be cleaner.
#3. Mac and cheese with hot dogs shouldn't be a staple dinner.
#2. As I write this, one kid is in the tub, two are running around wild, yet they all should be in bed!
And the #1 thing I feel guilty about . . . the mother I am in my mind has yet to become the mother I am in reality. However, as long as I have a tomorrow, I have time to try a little harder.
